Use the Search Box located at the top of the page on the Britannica Online Premium site to perform a search. The Search Box is located on the home page and on article pages (as well as a few other pages), and it is located in the same position on all of those pages. In the Search Box field you will see an image that looks like a magnifying glass with the word “Search” next to it. Once you click within that field, the word “Search” will disappear and you will be able to type in the term you want to look up. As you begin to type in your search term, a drop-down menu will appear with several article suggestions. Our search engine will try to suggest articles that possibly match the term that you are searching. If you are interested in one of the articles listed, simply select the article title in the drop-down menu and click on it to make your selection. This will redirect you to a Search Results page, which will include your selection plus other results. If the suggested articles in the list are not what you are searching for, just continue to type in the rest of your search term and click on the “Go” button (or hit the Enter key on your keyboard), and you will be directed to the Search Results page.
When you are typing in your search term, an “X” will appear in the Search Box field. Click on the “X” to clear the search field.
Advanced Search can be used to refine your search and provide you with accurate results that are more relevant to your search. To use this option, click on “Advanced Search,” which can be found under the Search Box field at the top of the page. In the image below you can see the Advanced Search box is open and several options are displayed that can help refine your search results. Here are the options available when using the Advanced Search feature:
With all of these words – This will search the Britannica Online databases for articles that contain all the terms you provide.
With the exact phrase – This will search the Britannica Online databases for articles that contain the exact phrase or terms in the order that you provide.
With any of these words – This will search the Britannica Online databases for articles that contain any (or all) of the terms that you enter into this field.

Once you have entered in your Advanced Search terms, simply click on the “Go” button (or hit the Enter key on your keyboard), and you will be directed to the Search Results page. For more information about the Search Results page, click here.
