Once a computer has been logged in, students should not be prompted to log in again. If students are asked repeatedly to log in on the same computer, the cookies are probably being deleted.
If a library provides individual network log-in accounts for each student, Britannica recommends that the library set up the network profiles so that cookies can be shared between accounts.
If library computers are set up to delete cookies periodically, then their Britannica cookie will be deleted. If possible, set up the computer so that the Britannica cookie is not deleted.
libraries using Deepfreeze, Fortress, or other security software products that refresh computers frequently may also be deleting the Britannica cookie. Britannica recommends including the library's Britannica cookie within the Deepfreeze refresh itself, so that the computer will automatically be logged in when it is refreshed.
What are some factors that impact the performance of Encyclopędia Britannica Online Library Edition?
Since Encyclopędia Britannica Online Library Edition is accessed over the Internet, it is subject to the same performance issues that affect other Web sites. Britannica strives to keep Encyclopędia Britannica Online Library Edition quick and efficient. There are some steps that libraries can take to improve the performance of Encyclopędia Britannica Online Library Edition (and other Web sites).
1. Britannica recommends using current versions of Internet browsers, specifically:
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 7.0 or higher
Firefox version 3 or higher
Safari version 3.x.x or higher
2. Reduce the number of other software programs running at the same time.
Britannica recommends reducing the programs that are started automatically during the computer's startup. Programs that are constantly running in the background and utilizing much of the computer's resources, such as online chat and video streaming programs, are some of the main culprits of poor performance.
Britannica recommends that students reduce the number of programs running concurrently with Encyclopędia Britannica Online Library Edition. For optimum performance, when using Encyclopędia Britannica Online Library Edition, students should close other programs such as e-mail, music, radio, graphic design, word processing, spreadsheet, online chat, and video streaming programs.
Britannica recommends closing extra browser windows after they are no longer needed.
3. Review the library's security and anti-virus measures that are in place for Internet browsers. Higher levels of security and anti-virus checking may negatively impact the performance of Encyclopędia Britannica Online Library Edition.
4. Investigate the performance problems by examining the Internet connections between the library and Britannica. The library's technical support staff can coordinate with Britannica Technical Support to trace the route of the Internet between the library and Britannica to identify possible problems.
