Search for Information

To learn more about a topic, use the search box. It's at the top of every page. Just type words in the box and click Go. Your search results will include Encyclopędia Britannica and Britannica Concise Encyclopedia articles as well as media, Web sites, and videos. Magazine and journals from EBSCO and Proquest are also available. Finally, from Merriam-Webster, you will see results for the dictionary and thesaurus as well as the notable quotations.

All the available content sources are listed along the left side of the search results page. Choose a content source to see the full list of results. When you find an encyclopedia article, video, or Web site, click the link to read more.

Dictionary & Thesaurus

To find spellings, meanings, and word choices for writing, use the dictionary and thesaurus search. From the home page, click the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary & Thesaurus button under the search box. You can also view dictionary and thesaurus results from the search results page by selecting the appropriate tab. When viewing an entry, you can switch between the dictionary and thesaurus. When you're reading an article, you can also double-click any word and a pop-up window will appear with the word's dictionary entry.

Using Research Tools and Other Features

The site includes several ways to browse for encyclopedia articles. In A-Z Browse, you can explore the complete encyclopedia alphabetically. Subject browse allows you to find articles using an outline of topics. The Timelines list important events in history and links to related articles. In World Atlas, you will learn geography and facts about places by exploring maps.

Your search results can come from two encyclopedias, our media database, magazine articles, the Web's best sites, and videos. Encyclopędia Britannica articles display as the default search results. From the search results page, click any of the items on the left to see results from the content source.

With over 73,000 articles, Encyclopędia Britannica is one of the most complete and accurate information sources in the world. It contains both short and book-length articles on every subject.

 

Britannica Concise Encyclopedia

Britannica Concise Encyclopedia features over 28,000 short articles. These articles can provide quick answers to questions about history, art, science, and other subjects.

 

Multimedia

Britannica's multimedia database includes thousands of photographs, illustrations, and sound files. You can find these items through search and many also accompany encyclopedia articles.

 

The Web's Best Sites

Resources in Britannica's Internet Guide can complement the information found in the encyclopedias. Britannica editors have reviewed thousands of Web sites to ensure their quality and appropriateness. Click on an interesting Web site to open it in another window.

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus

Thousands of entries with definitions, pronunciation guides, word histories, synonyms, and antonyms are available through the dictionary and thesaurus. You can search these valuable resources by entering a word in any search box, or, when you discover an unfamiliar word in an encyclopedia or magazine article, simply double-click the word to see the appropriate dictionary entry in a pop-up window.

Combining detailed statistics with powerful tools for analysis and display, this resource features a unique collection of in-depth information about the countries of the world and allows you to create interesting and information comparative charts and tables.
